Best Tower Fan Reviews

Thanks for taking the time to read our reviews of what we believe to be the best tower fans that are currently available on the market. The main purpose of any tower fan is to help keep rooms cool in an efficient and effective manner.

There are a lot of these available in a whole range of styles, different features and different sizes. Picking the right one for a room in your home can just get very complicated.

A large number of people will typically go for a pedestal fan because it is a cheaper option. If you want to consider those as an an option, then please check out our guide on those where you can find out about the best pedestal fans.

However in this article we are going to show you our research and reviews on the many options for Tower Fans.

Most home owners will naturally assume that a fan is some type of circular fan that creates a breeze. This is the typical operation of a pedestal fan and many other fan types. However the tower fan doesn't operate like that.

How Does a Tower Fan Work?

Tower fans are typically tall and thin, and they stand upright on the floor. The problem with pedestal fans is that they are rather unsightly in a room. Tower fans on the other hand look very stylish and can be placed in an area of the room where they are essentially out of the way.

You can adjust the height and they work on a principle of oscillating or moving the air around in a room. This is the common principle used for all fans, but the tower fan is slimmer and certainly looks a great deal better in any room.

The air in the room gets drawn in through an inlet on the side of the fan housing. That air is then pushed back out again at a 90 degree angle. Tower fans are tall so this air when pushed out covers a wider space than when it was pulled in. That is the process that circulates the air around the room.

Most tower fans have what are called "impeller blades" which are housed in a cylindrical container inside the fan. Some tower fans like the Dyson and the Air Choice use a bladeless mechanism instead of blades. It is different technology but does the same task as the blades.

When the blades and their container start to spin, it is that process that blows the air. The speed of rotation is usually controlled by a speed switch. On a low speed setting the blades move slower than they do when you select the high speed.

Tower fans move the air in a vertical direction and that is the opposite of what most fans do, as they push and slice the air horizontally.

Important Features of Tower Fans

We have completed a detailed buying guide at the end of this review. However, we wanted to include the key features that you should be aware of, before buying a tower fan.

“Make sure that any tower fan you buy has variable speeds. Most tower fans will have at least the basic 3 speeds of low, medium and high. This is important as it puts you in control of the amount of airflow”

Enda McLarnon

“If you like the convenience of being able to operate your tower fan from the comfort of your chair, office or bed, then make sure that the fan you buy comes with a remote control. The good news is that most do. The better ones allow you to control all the features whereas some remotes only allow you the on/off option”

Enda McLarnon

“Oscillation means that the fan turns from side to side and helps blow air around all of the room. With any tower fan you should be able to have this feature. Some of the better ones will also have louvers that allow you to also direct the air up and down”

Enda McLarnon

Tower Fan Detailed Buying Guide

In his section we dig into the detail behind Tower fans. Hopefully we will be able to answer the many questions that buyers have when they are considering buying this type of fan.

Key Benefits of Using a Tower Fan

  • They are tall and slim so they do not take up a lot of room. That helps make them a good choice for smaller rooms where space is important
  • They are much nicer in appearance than most other types of fans
  • They are light in weight and that does make them easier to move about from room to room
  • They are quieter than other fans though they still make a noise
  • Most tower fans have built-in air filters that help remove dust, pollen and pet dander from the air in your room
  • The majority of tower fans are stable so they don't fall over
  • Almost all tower fans have some type of timer and auto-shut off timer which means you can save energy in the home

Those are the main benefits of owning and using a tower fan in your home. The main reason people buy them is that they really don't look like a big ugly fan, and they do a decent job of cleaning the air and cooling down the home.

Tower Fan Speeds

Practically any tower fan that you buy will come with 3 speeds. These are low medium and high. The high speed is generally used to quickly cool down a room, and once that has been achieved, then the fan can be turned down to the lower setting.

In most cases the fan will do a good job on the low setting. When it gets particularly warm in the room, you may need to use the medium setting.

Some tower fans, especially the Honeywell and Dyson brand will give you more speed choices and usually up to 10 different speeds. If you like those kind of options, then check out those two brands.

Tower Fan Oscillation

When completing our research we noticed that many buyers get quite worked up about oscillation. This simply means does the fan move from side to side? Almost every tower fan will do that. The only difference is how far they move from side to side, or the angle of oscillation. Most of those sweep through a 70 degree angle.

The reason that is important is that when the fan is in oscillation mode, then it pushes air through a wider space and as such will start to cool down the whole room. So rather than the air blowing on just one area, the air gets shifted around the room.

One slight difference, and many buyers liked this, was that some fans have also got louvers fitted. The no 1 choice on our list the Lasko 4930 has these for example. That means now only does the fan move from side to side, but by adjusting the louvers the air can also be moved up and down.

Tower Fan Remote Controls

You would not believe the number of complaints buyers of tower fans make about the remote controls. Almost all tower fans will come with some form of remote control. It is of course a very convenient thing to have as you can control the fan from the comfort of your chair or bed.

The better models of fans will have a remote control that allows you to control all of the features of the fan. Some don't though and may only have an on/off and a speed control. It is always worth checking what features the remote can do as many buyers would also like to be able to control the oscillation for example.

The complaints are that buyers receive these without the batteries included. Some manufacturers don't include the batteries and in certain areas batteries are not allowed to be sent in the post or by a courier. It isn't a huge complaint but some buyers do get worked up about it.

The biggest complain though is about the range the remote control covers. Some of those can be quite short in distance and then the control is virtually useless. Most remotes talk to the LCD or LED panel on the top of the fan. When using a remote it is important that this display is visible.
