The main purpose of a pedestal fan is to help keep a room cool by circulating air. Mainly these have been designed for an office but some people do use them in the home.  They are especially used in bedrooms to help create a gentle breeze when people are asleep. For that though you really do have to pick one that is very quiet.

Like any type of fan that uses a spinning blade you should know that this type will not actually lower the temperature in a room. They work by using a set of spinning blades, that create a breeze which can then circulate air and that helps cool you down.

They are not as effective as air conditioning, but they are cheaper to buy, and a lot cheaper to run in terms of energy costs.

The average price of a pedestal is between $35-55 but you can pay a lot more if you want more speed variations and want it be ultra quiet and perhaps with a remote control capability. There are plenty of different styles available and there is one to suit every type of budget.

Below I have completed a quick buying guide and below that is a Top 10 Comparison Table of the best pedestal fans available right now. Underneath that I have completed a short review on each of those.

A Quick Pedestal Fan Buying Guide

Room Size

When shopping for a new pedestal fan, the first thing to consider and be aware of is the size of the room in your house or in the office. Many people overlook this part and end up buying one that is too small to be effective in a larger room. Some people also buy a very powerful fan that is just to big for a smallish room.

To measure a room just multiply the length and breadth of a room to get the square foot size. For example a room that is 15 feet x 15 feet should be 225 square feet. For something like a ceiling fan this is more important, but even for these type it is still worth considering.

When you know the size of the room, then most manufacturers state on their product what area the pedestal fan is designed for.

Directional or Fixed

Some of these fans have what is called a fixed head. That means it just blows air out in one direction depending on how it is positioned. This is fine if you just want to cool down a single fixed area. However if you want to cool down a slightly larger area, then ideally you want a head that moves forwards and backwards.

So for example if you had one of these in a bedroom to keep you cool at night. You could simply have a directional one that could be adjusted to sweep the air backwards and forwards over the bed. This is often referred to as oscillation, and I think it is really important to have that as an option.

The good news is that most fans do have that option.

Similarly in an office environment if there were several people in a meeting room, the direction could be set to sweep around everyone in the room. If it was fixed it would just blow against perhaps one or two people.

Pedestal Height

The pedestal height is simply the height that the actual fan is positioned from the ground. With the better ones this can be adjusted up and down and allow you to better target the area, where you want the air to blow. To be honest I would not buy one that didn’t have this or wasn’t directional. They are two very important features.

Some of these fans are quite small in the height that you can vary, so always check that there is a decent movement on that, as that allows you a lot more control over the positioning of the air stream.

Most of the fans use some form of wood for the blades such as plywood. You can get some that use steel or aluminium so please be aware that they will be more dangerous than a wooden blade.

Some of the cheaper models use plastic blades. At the end of the day they spin and circulate air and there is no big difference in the amount of air that the blades will shift. Very few manufacturers use wooden blades any more which is a good thing.

The other main difference you will find is that the number of blades can vary. Some have 3 blades, some have 4 and some have 5 blades. The more blades you have the better, as that does help generate more airflow.

Tilting Head

You can get this type of fan with a tilting head. That means that rather then having air blow directly on to you, the head can be tilted upwards to deflect the air around you. So just remember the options with where you can position the air to blow.

I have mentioned the height movement which is done by adjusting the length of the pedestal up and down. I have also mentioned the oscillation, which is when the head of the fan moves from left to right, and then back again. This is the third option where you can angle the fan head.

Having all three options puts you in control and gives you the best choices for controlling the airflow in a room.

Controls and Remote Control

Mainly the controls are done by a pull switch and this usually handles on/off, and the speed settings. Many of the newer ones will come with a remote controlled unit to make your life that little bit easier.

These are plugged into an electrical socket, and there is an on/off switch. You will then have a choice of speeds to select from. As a minimum there should be low, medium or high. Many manufacturers will offer more selections than that, but three is the minimum you should go for.

The oscillation is normally activated by a switch. If it has a tilting head, this is also done by making an adjustment, at the rear of the fan.

Remote Controls

Most people will be happy enough to manually set and adjust their pedestal fan. Having a remote does make life that little bit easier. Picture yourself laying in bed, and you want to lower the air. Would you rather get out of bed and do that, or flick a button on the remote?

The same applies when you want to turn it off. You will pay a little extra to have one that is remote controlled, but not a great deal more. Most remotes can not control oscillation, but most have on/off, and speed selection.

Do You Need a Timer for Your Fan?

Some fans come with a timer but many do not. If that is a key requirement for you, then be sure to check that out. Timers can be handy so as you can set and forget the fan, knowing that it will automatically come on and off. You can set the fan to come on for 1, 2 or 4 hours, handy when you are going to sleep.

Cleaning the Blades

Please don’t overlook the importance of being able to do this. These types of pedestal fans will gather dust around the blades. They will need to be regularly cleaned, otherwise you simply end up blowing old dust around your clean home.

That will mean taking the grid off, which is usually easy. Once the blades have been cleaned, it will mean putting them back on again, and that is not always easy. Most of these snap together, but remember these have been made on a factory production line, with all the right tools.

Standing in your living room or bedroom, having just cleaned the blades, you son’t have a production line. There is normally just you and a wire cage. These can be a real pain in the butt to get back together again. Just be aware of that when you are making your purchase.

Home Pedestal Fan Reviews

When considering a pedestal fan for your home, the main thing to consider as I have mentioned is room size. After that it comes down to the power of the motor, the number of different speeds, how quiet the fan is and most importantly how long it will actually last.

Rather than use expensive air conditioning one of these can save you money on utility costs as they are inexpensive to run. They do not need a lot of maintenance other than a clean once a month to get rid of any build ups of dust. That can gather in behind the cage and will need cleaned.

A good way to do that is with a vacuum cleaner. Sometimes you may have to take the cage off, and give it a proper clean. At that time, it is always a very good idea to give a little maintenance, by adding a little fine oil to the area where the blades meet the motor.

No 1 – Rowenta VU5551 Turbo Silence Review

Rowenta VU5551 Turbo Silence 4-Speed Oscillating Pedestal Fan with Remote ConThis Rowenta model is the most popular in their range. It is also one of the most expensive on our list. You are buying a very high quality pedestal fan. If you can afford this one, then I would recommend that you go ahead and buy it.

This is a 110 Volt 16″ fan and buyers have given this one a 90% buyer satisfaction rating.

In my opinion this is the best one that is currently available. It has 5 blades that produce a lot of airflow and this one is super quiet. The manufacturer states that this one is even suitable for libraries, so you get the idea of how quiet this one really is.

This would make a great choice for a bedroom, due to the low noise generated, and the fact that it has a good remote control, that works really well. It can cool a room up to 256 square feet.

It has an adjustable height from 42-54″, with remote control and comes with 3 settings and a turbo boost selection when required. The head pivots ninety degrees in all directions.

This one is simple to put together, easy enough to move around and easy to clean. Many people ask if this one has a timer, and the answer is no, it does not. The remote control allows you to change speeds and turn it on and off. You can’t change the direction or the oscillation with the remote.

This is an attractive fan, a bronze colour with a silver colored grid and the blades are a shade of blue.

  • It is one of the quietest pedestal fans on the market, making it ideal for a bedroom, or small home office
  • The remote control works really well for speed changes and turning it on and off
  • Very powerful when you need a good blast of air, using the turbo boost
  • It needs some basic assembly when it arrives, and although the instructions are awful, it is still pretty simple to figure out. It takes about 5 minutes.
  • It can be used outside on patios etc, but can not be left out in damp conditions as it will eventually rust

  • The remote does not allow you to change oscillation
  • Filters need to be changed once a year to help with odor cleaning
  • Has a small LED light, which is bright, and some people did not like that when trying to sleep
  • It doesn’t have a timer but you can buy a plug that will switch it on and off

No 2 – Lasko 1843 Remote Control Cyclone Review

Lasko 1843 Remote Control Cyclone Pedestal FanThis one does have a pretty cool name. It is a huge best selling product from this brand and it gets good ratings by actual buyers of the product. It is slightly less expensive than many and in the main that is down to the fact that it is made of plastic, with plastic blades.

It is the BEST SELLER over at Amazon. That is I think mainly down to its lower $46 price point. Buyers rate this one with an 86% satisfaction rating, and for a product as comparatively cheap as this one, that does represent good value.

It has the tilt back feature, and what is really good about this one, is that you can program it to come on and off at set times. The timer can be set for 1, 2 or 4 hours.

It also has a remote control and it does oscillate. The remote can be used to switch the fan on and off, change the speed and set the timer.

It has low, medium and high settings. You can also adjust the vertical height, which is always a very useful feature.

  • Buyers mainly buy this one as it is good value for money, and the fact that it has a timer
  • It has a no tool assembly, though assembly can be a little fiddly, some patience is required. It takes about 15-20 minutes.
  • Relatively quiet although all fans make some noise

  • The grill is not easy to get back in place once removed to clean the blades
  • A number of buyers said the blades were out of balance and that did cause some wobble
  • The remote is fiddly to work

Costway 16″ Adjustable Pedestal Fan Review

Costway 16 inch Adjustable Pedestal FanThis is a 110 volt 16″ fan, that comes packed with quite a few features.

It has a list price of $39.99, but again please shop around especially online for a lower price.

Overall buyers have given this one a buyer satisfaction rating of 86%, and that makes it one of the highest rated on the market right now.

It has an electronic timer, which can be set anywhere between 0.5-7.5 hours and that is a very handy thing to have. It has 3 speeds,  including a sleep mode, a tilt back feature and you can adjust the height. You can either manually adjust this one, or use the remote control.

This one has an interesting blade setup, in that it uses dual blades, which pushes more air out than normal blade types.

  • The large blade and shorter blades work together really well to push the air around
  • Three useful speeds or normal, wind and the very useful sleep mode
  • Most buyers say this one is very quiet and suitable for a bedroom

  • A few buyers thought the breeze from this fan was not strong enough

Lasko 1850 Remote Pedestal Fan Review

Lasko 1850 Remote Pedestal FanAnother similar one from Lasko. This one has three speeds, an on/off timer and again can be remote controlled.

This is a 110 volt 18″ fan with a list price of $57, but can usually be found cheaper online. Buyers have given this fan an 85% buyer satisfaction rating, and it sells consistently well.

It is quick to assemble and has an interesting “breeze feature” that you can set. It then works its way up through the speed setting and delivers a really nice breeze.

There is a slight humming noise with this one according to reviewers, but almost all agreed it was a very powerful fan. It does oscillate and the head also can be tilted. The majority of this fan is made from plastic, but the bearings are metal, which is a good thing.

  • Moves air very well indeed and creates a nice white noise
  • Buyers liked the timer a lot
  • They also liked that it could be adjusted in terms of height, oscillation and tilt
  • Assembly takes just a few minutes and is very easy to do
  • Buyers said this one works a treat in the bedroom on stick humid nights

  • Not suitable for leaving outside
  • Can’t use the remote to change oscillation, but this is common in all pedestal fans

Lasko 1820 Performance Adjustable Review

Lasko 1820 Performance Adjustable Oscillating Pedestal FanThe 1820 model from Lasko is an 18″ pedestal fan and is in the $28-30 price range like many of this particular brand.

Buyers have given this fan an average buyer satisfaction rating of 83% which is of course a very good and consistent rating.

You can adjust the height and it does have tilt back.

It looks OK and is nice and sturdy, and this lower price point makes this basic pedestal fan a great choice. It has three speeds, oscillation and you can also adjust the height of the fan. It is also very easy to put together and assemble.

  • One of the most affordable pedestal fans on the market
  • Front of the cage can be easily opened to clean the grill
  • It does generate a lot of airflow, and I mean a LOT

  • Limited height movement
  • The base is very wide so takes up a fair bit of ground space
  • Noisy especially at the higher speeds

Lasko 2527 16″ Adjustable Review

Lasko 2527 16" Adjustable Pedestal FanThis Lasko model is one of the cheapest that you can buy. This is a 110 volt 16″ fan.

It has 3 speeds, tilt-back and you can adjust the height of the fan. This one is light weight and made from plastic. That has put some people off but it shouldn’t as it performs really well.

Overall buyers have given this fan a buyer satisfaction rate of 83%, so do not let the lower price put you off buying this one.

You can tilt the angle of the head to help with whole room circulation and we think for the price this is a good one. The base is sturdy and it is very easy to assemble and set up. You can adjust this fan from 37-53″ tall, which is a decent range of heights. It weighs around 3 pounds so light enough to move around the home.

  • Can easily and quickly move a lot of air around
  • The grill comes on and off very easily which is great when you need to clean the blades
  • Quiet but loud enough on the highest speed to generate a nice white noise
  • Easy to assemble in just a couple of minutes

  • A basic good fan but no remote and no timer

Lasko 1827 Adjustable Fan Review

Lasko 1827 Adjustable Elegance and Performance Pedestal FanThis is the best selling pedestal fan that Lasko produces. It has quite literally sold in the tens of thousands.

This is a 100 volt 18″ fan which is a black colour. Overall buyers have given this pedestal fan an 80% buyer satisfaction rating. The list price on this one is $51.87, but most times there will be various offers available online.

It can provide a wide degree of cooling and you can adjust the height. It also has the tilt back feature which I do like to see. There are not a ton of features on this fan and what you see is what you get.

Although this is a best seller, there are other ones on this page that I think are just better value for money. We rated this one as the 8th most popular choice, in terms of satisfaction rating but people clearly do buy a lot of this one.

  • It is a huge seller, great value for money and buyers rate it very highly
  • It is lightweight and that makes it very portable to move around the home
  • It is height adjustable
  • Some people buy this mainly for the low setting when sleeping as it generates a nice level of white noise
  • Very fast and easy to assemble

  • It is a basic fan so does not have a remote control or timer
  • Might be too noisy for some people

Air King 9420 20-Inch Industrial Grade Review

Air King 9420 20-Inch Industrial Grade Pedestal FanThis fan from the brand Air King is like the one above a well rated product, but again an expensive option at almost $150. It is however classed as “industrial grade” and that in essence is what you are paying for.

Buyers have given this one a satisfaction rating of 80%. The majority of the complaints come from people who have bought this one for the house. It really is not a good choice for internal home use.

This one is built to last and has a very powerful motor. It is a 20″ fan and the body of it is made from steel that has been coated to make it last longer. This one has been designed for places like garages, workshops, warehouses and offices.

It isn’t ideal for the home though some buyers do get one for their house, and mainly for the porch.

It has 3 steel blades and three different speeds. Some people have bought this one because they got fed up with the cheaper versions constantly breaking down.

The head pivots and I do have to tell you the air flow from this fan is phenomenal.

  • This one really does move a lot of air very quickly One buyer describes the three speeds as fast, super fast and hurricane. Pretty accurate actually.
  • Great for keeping all type of bugs away when sitting outside
  • Also great for creating an airflow in really humid weather
  • Really stable as it sits on a large base

  • Not suitable for a bedroom and I think not suitable for any internal home use, designed for outside and garages etc
  • This one is noisy
  • Pretty heavy to move around

Lasko 1825 Pedestal Fan Review

Lasko 1825 Cyclone Pedestal FanAnd yet another one from the very popular Lasko brand. This is not the cheapest of options with a list price of around $70. This one has an average buyer satisfaction rating of 79%.

It is a 100 volt 18″ fan and has 3 speeds. It is worth noting that this one does not have a remote control or a timer feature.

You can adjust the height on this, and it does have three speeds and the tilt-back feature. Again the assembly of this is pretty basic and it does create a really strong air flow, which of course is the prime purpose of the fan.

Almost all of this fan is made from plastic, but almost every buyer said that it looked and felt solid. It has a wide base and it is light enough to be able to easily move from room to room

  • Buyers say that it can very quickly shift a lot of air
  • This is a loud fan, but interestingly many buyers said they liked that as the white noise helped them sleep, though that will not be the case for other people
  • Very easy and fast to assemble
  • Lightweight so easy to move around the home

  • It is loud at high speed

Honeywell QuietSet 16″ Stand Fan Review

Honeywell QuietSet 16 Stand FanAnother good brand for any type of electric fan is of course the Honeywell brand. This one is perfect for cooling an entire room quickly.

It is a 110 volt 16″ fan, with 5 different speeds and it is a super quiet fan. It even has a “super quiet” mode setting. That makes this one a perfect choice for the bedroom.

It has a list price of $60, but easy to find it cheaper online. Buyers have given this one a satisfaction rate of 70%, which is considerably lower, than what we have seen so far.

This one is a very big seller though, and I believe that is down to the discounted prices online, rather than the overall quality of the fan.

There is a shut off timer on this one with 1-8 hour auto-shut off. The front panel also has soft LED lights, which look great, but some people did find these annoying.

  • It is a very good price for a fan
  • It is very quiet
  • Affordable choice for a bedroom
  • A great choice if you don’t like noise
  • The timer function is really handy as is the remote control

  • Has blue LED lights which are too bright for many buyers
  • The beeping sound is also too loud for many
  • A few buyers said it broke down and stopped working

How To Assemble A Lasko Pedestal Fan Quickly

Here is a really good video on how to assemble one of the Lasko types quickly.

Hopefully that has made your decision a little bit easier. As you can see there are a lot of choices available, depending on exactly what features you want from a pedestal fan.
